9th VDMA Conference on Variant Management: The trend towards digitalization is also changing the mechanical and plant engineering sector. The focus is on the customer’s requirements with the aim of developing fast and marketable solutions. Experience shows that structuring the product portfolio in line with requirements – based on platforms, assemblies, and reusable components – improves process reliability and reduces the costs of in-house value creation. The conference provides exciting insights into practical presentations.
More than 100 participants and 27 exhibitors of products and services related to variant management met on March 3, 2020, for the 9th VDMA Variant Management Conference. Headlined “Portfolio design in disruptive times”, two keynotes were presented, dealing on the one hand with the structuring of the product portfolio and on the other hand with the methods of digitalization in the context of configuration. In addition, practical examples from the mechanical and plant engineering sector were presented, which dealt with the following topics: worldwide quotation, automated configuration, cross-site costing, complexity management, e-commerce solutions, and 3D configuration. Against the background of the broad range of topics and the numerous experts on-site, visitors to the event were able to take away valuable information and tips for projects in their own companies.
